Additional relaxation up to the overall 50-year ceiling applies for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), differently abled (10-15 years), ex-servicemen and widows (up to 5 years). Relaxations and cut-off dates are category-specific.

Basic eligibility paths
- Stream I is open direct recruitment for graduates; Stream II is for full members/approved probationers in Kerala Government service below 1st Gazetted rank; Stream III is for serving 1st Gazetted officers and above.
- Candidates must complete One Time Registration (OTR) on the Kerala PSC website and apply separately for each stream they are eligible for.
- A Medical Fitness Certificate is required for all streams; Streams II and III additionally require a Service Certificate from the Controlling Officer.
Relaxations & certificates
- 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates of Kerala, subject to the overall upper age limit of 50 years.
- Differently abled candidates: up to 15 years for vision/hearing/speech disability, up to 10 years for orthopaedic disability.
- Ex-servicemen: relaxation equal to their defence-service length plus unemployment period, up to a maximum of 5 years.
- Widows: up to 5 years relaxation from the upper age limit.

- Preliminary Paper I: History (India and Kerala), World History, Cultural Heritage of Kerala, Indian Constitution & Public Administration, Reasoning & Mental Ability, Geography (100 marks, 1.5 hours).
- Preliminary Paper II: Economy & Planning, Science & Technology, Current Events, Language Proficiency in English plus a regional language (100 marks, 1.5 hours).
- Main Examination: three General Studies papers of 100 marks/2 hours each covering the same broad areas in descriptive format; ranking is based on Main Examination and Interview marks only.
