A limited departmental competitive examination open only to serving Group C employees of 12 participating central services and cadres, held to make additions to the select list of Junior Secretariat Assistant / Lower Division Clerk Grade.

Age
No single age limit applies. Several participating cadres cap eligibility at 45 years (50 years for SC/ST) on their own crucial date; the crucial date for counting approved service is 1 Jan 2025, 1 Jul 2025 or 1 Aug 2025 depending on the cadre.
Relaxations and cut-off dates are category-specific.
Application fee
The notice dated 5 Jun 2026 prescribes no application fee. The printed application must be forwarded by the candidate's Service/Cadre Controlling Authority to SSC (Northern Region) by 3 Jul 2026.

Who can apply?

Basic eligibility paths

  • Open only to serving employees of the 12 participating services and cadres named in the notice; the application must be forwarded through the Service/Cadre Controlling Authority.
  • Class 12 pass from a recognised board and at least three years' regular service as a Group C employee in Pay Level-1 on the cadre's crucial date.
  • Railway Board Secretariat Clerical Service candidates must be permanent or regularly appointed temporary Group C employees with Grade Pay ₹1,800 and three years' regular service.
  • Employees on deputation to ex-cadre posts with the competent authority's approval remain eligible, and that service counts towards the length-of-service requirement.
  • Reservation for SC, ST and PwBD candidates follows the vacancy position reported by each Cadre Controlling Authority.

  • SC/ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxations follow the applicable notification.

Selection process & syllabus

Stage by stage, without mixing recruitment years.

Selection stages

  1. 1Part-I Paper-II: computer-based objective examination — 100 questions/100 marks (Language, i.e. General English or Samanya Hindi, 50; General Knowledge 50), 2 hours, with 0.25 negative marking
  2. 2Part-I Paper-I: descriptive written examination — short essay of 100 marks in 1 hour 30 minutes, evaluated only for candidates shortlisted on Paper-II
  3. 3Part-II: evaluation of record of service from APARs (60 marks)
  4. 4Final selection on the aggregate of Paper-I, Paper-II and the service-record evaluation; cadre-wise merit lists are drawn up to the number of vacancies

Syllabus snapshot

  • Paper-I (descriptive): one essay of 400–500 words on any of the specified subjects.
  • Paper-II Language (General English or Samanya Hindi): simple composition and applied grammar.
  • Paper-II General Knowledge: current events, matters of everyday observation and experience, and general information about India.
