Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test for Working Teachers 2026 (TNTET)

A special Teacher Eligibility Test that TRB conducts only for teachers already working in Tamil Nadu, so that serving SGT, BT Assistant and equivalent-cadre teachers can obtain the TET eligibility certificate required for promotion and continued service.

Open only to teachers appointed on or before 1 Sep 2025 as Secondary Grade Teacher, BT Assistant, BRTE, Special Education Teacher (IEDSS) or an equivalent cadre on time-scale, consolidated or part-time pay in Government, Government-Aided or recognised private schools in Tamil Nadu. The underlying educational qualifications are those in the Special Rules for the Tamil Nadu School Educational Subordinate Services (G.O.(Ms).No.13, School Education, dated 30.01.2020), the Tamil Nadu Elementary Education Subordinate Services (G.O.(Ms).No.12, dated 30.01.2020), G.O.(Ms).No.144 dated 17.06.2025 for IEDSS teachers, and the NCTE norms.
Age
Notification 01/2026 sets no age limit; eligibility depends on being a working teacher appointed on or before 1 Sep 2025.
Relaxations and cut-off dates are category-specific.
Application fee
Rs 600 per application; Rs 300 for SC, SCA, ST and Differently Abled candidates. Separate applications and separate fees are required for Paper-I and Paper-II.

Who can apply?

A readable first check—not a legal eligibility decision.

Basic eligibility paths

  • Only teachers appointed on or before 1 Sep 2025 in the listed cadres may apply; the notification lists Directorate of School Education, Directorate of Elementary Education, MBC, Adi-Dravidar Welfare, Tribal Welfare, Chennai/Coimbatore/Madurai Corporations, Forest, Differently Abled and other departments, plus aided and unaided recognised private schools.
  • SGT and BT Assistant teachers working in the self-finance unit of aided schools and in unaided recognised private schools are also eligible.
  • Qualified serving teachers who opt for promotion are also required to apply.
  • Addendum 01B/2026 (12 May 2026) admitted working teachers of Government, aided and private schools in the Union Territory of Puducherry, whose marks are furnished to the Puducherry Government.

Relaxations & certificates

  • SC/ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxations follow the applicable notification.
  • Always check the certificate format and cut-off date in the official notice.

Syllabus snapshot

  • Paper I (150 MCQs, 150 marks, 3 hours): Child Development and Pedagogy for ages 6-11 (30), Language I — Tamil/Telugu/Malayalam/Kannada/Urdu (30), Language II English (30), Mathematics (30) and Environmental Studies (30); set on the State syllabus for Classes I-V with standard up to the Secondary stage.
  • Paper II (150 MCQs, 150 marks, 3 hours): Child Development and Pedagogy for ages 11-14 (30), Language I (30), Language II English (30) and either Mathematics & Science or Social Science (60); set on the State syllabus for Classes VI-VIII with standard up to the Higher Secondary stage.
  • Minimum qualifying marks in Notification 01/2026, per G.O.(Ms) No.23, School Education (TRB), dated 28.01.2026: 90 marks (60%) for General, 75 marks (50%) for BC/BCM/MBC-DNC and PwD, and 60 marks (40%) for SC/SCA/ST. Addendum 01A/2026 (26 Feb 2026) then fixed the PwD qualifying mark at 60 marks under G.O.(Ms) No.46, School Education (TRB), dated 25.02.2026 — TRB's TNTET page states the revised figure.
